Whirlpool Washer F20 Error Code

Whirlpool says F20 (FH on some models) is a water supply problem. On newer models the same thing shows as F8 E1 or LF: the washer is not seeing the right amount of incoming water. Also shown as FH, F8 E1, F8E1, LF on some models.

Step 1

What usually causes F20

Most common first. In my experience the first one or two on this list account for most Whirlpool F20 calls.

  1. 1. One or both supply faucets closed, or hoses kinked
  2. 2. Clogged inlet valve screens
  3. 3. Low water pressure, or flood-stop hoses that tripped
  4. 4. Drain hose installed so water siphons out during fill
  5. 5. Faulty water inlet valve
Step 2

What to try before you call

Safe things a homeowner can do. Unplug the washer before reaching into anything.

  1. Open both hot and cold faucets fully. The washer needs pressure from both.
  2. Turn off the water, remove the hoses and clean the inlet screens with a brush.
  3. Straighten kinked hoses and reset flood-stop hoses if you have them.
  4. Confirm the drain hose goes about 4.5 inches into the standpipe and is not taped, then unplug for 5 minutes and restart.
Step 3

When to stop and call a technician

Water flows strongly from both faucets and the screens are clean but the washer still will not fill. At that point the fix is usually a part, and guessing at parts gets expensive fast. I test first, then quote, so you only pay for what is actually broken.

Questions

Whirlpool F20 questions

How do I clear the F20 code on my Whirlpool washer?

Fix the cause first, then unplug the washer (or turn it off at the breaker) for about a minute and restart. The code clears once the washer no longer sees the problem. If it comes right back, the cause is still there.

Is F20 the same as FH / F8 E1 / F8E1 / LF?

Yes. Whirlpool uses different displays on different model years, so the same problem shows up as F20 on some machines and FH or F8 E1 or F8E1 or LF on others. The fix is the same.

Is a Whirlpool washer with a F20 error worth repairing?

Usually yes. Water inlet valve and similar parts cost a fraction of a new washer. I tell you the price before any work starts, and if a repair is not worth it I say so.

Can you come out today for a Whirlpool F20 error in Rockwall?

Most days, yes. I carry common Whirlpool parts on the truck, so many F20 repairs are done in one visit. Call or text (469) 446-4242 with your model number.
