Whirlpool Washer F21 Error Code
Whirlpool says F21 (F02 on some models) means draining is taking longer than expected. On newer models the same problem shows as F9 E1: the washer cannot drain correctly. Also shown as F02, F9 E1, F9E1 on some models.

- 3. Drain hose pushed too far into the standpipe, or sealed with tape so there is no air gap

- Press Pause/Cancel, unplug the washer for 5 minutes and restart.
- Check the drain hose for kinks and make sure it goes no more than about 4.5 inches into the standpipe with an air gap.
- Unplug the washer, open the lower front panel, drain into a shallow pan and clean the pump filter.
- Clear the small drain holes in the door seal and use only HE detergent.

When to stop and call a technician
The filter and hose are clear and the washer still will not drain, or the pump does not run. At that point the fix is usually a part, and guessing at parts gets expensive fast. I test first, then quote, so you only pay for what is actually broken.
