Hums but does not grind
Usual cause: Jammed flywheel, usually a bone, pit or utensil.
What I do: Cleared and reset. Quick.
A disposal that hums, leaks or just died. I am Ramez, owner of R3M Appliance Repair, and I repair or replace garbage disposals in Rockwall and the cities around it, often in the same visit as a dishwasher call since the two share a drain.
The problems I see most, what usually causes them, and how I fix them.
Usual cause: Jammed flywheel, usually a bone, pit or utensil.
What I do: Cleared and reset. Quick.
Usual cause: Tripped reset button, failed switch or a burned-out motor.
What I do: Reset or replaced.
Usual cause: Failed seal, cracked housing or loose sink flange.
What I do: Seals and flanges replaced; a cracked housing means a new unit.
Usual cause: Clogged drain line or a partially jammed unit.
What I do: Cleared on site.
I check the jam and reset first, then the electrical and the seals. If the unit is done, I can replace it the same day.
Jams and switches are worth fixing. A leaking housing or seized motor on an older unit means replacement, and a new disposal is inexpensive.
